ANNUAL EARTH DAY CLEANUP - COLLINS BEACH
SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 2013 - 9:00am - 1:00pm
Please join us on Saturday, April 20, for our annual Earth Day cleanup at Collins Beach on Sauvie Island. This statewide event is sponsored by SOLV, and each year, Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife hosts this event across all of Sauvie island. As we have for the past several years, ORCOBA will be participating with cleanup activities at Collins Beach.
Besides all of the great recreation opportunities, the Sauvie Island Wildlife Area (SIWA) is also a critical habitat for many waterfowl, and raptors such as bald eagles and osprey. These cleanups are vital to not only maintaining the beauty and safety of beaches and wetlands on the island, but protecting the wildlife as well, by removing Styrofoam and other debris that is often mistaken for food by birds and other island critters who ingest it and die a slow painful death from digestive system blockage and starvation.
Click here to pre-register online now. (Select "I am registering myself as part of a group", then click on "Oregon Clothing-Optional Beach Alliance" in the drop-down menu that appears.) Or you can register in person at check-in on the day of the cleanup.
Check-in and in-person registration is at the Sauvie Island Academy (School) at 14445 NW Charlton Road, just off Reeder Road, between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
Directions: Take Highway 30 from Portland towards Scappoose. At the Sauvie Island bridge, turn right and go over the bridge and past the general store. Go straight about 2 miles on NW Sauvie Island Road. At the first Y at the road, keep right onto Reeder Road. In 1/2 mile turn right onto NW Charlton Road; the school is on the hill on your left.
Park anywhere in the school parking lot. You will only be here a short time to register and get your supplies. Just let the ODFW staff at check-in know you're with ORCOBA, and they'll make sure you are assigned to Collins Beach for the cleanup. Once you're registered, just drive out to Collins Beach and pick an area to clean. There will be no additional check-in at Collins so you can get right at it. (Cleanup may of course be conducted in the nude within the designated clothing-optional areas of the beach; clothing must be worn everywhere else outside of the CO boundary.)
Bring work gloves, sturdy shoes, and dress in layers for all kinds of weather. Litter bags and one-day parking passes will be provided to clean-up participants. As in past years, we will be cleaning Collins Beach itself, as well as the adjacent wooded areas and parking lot. You may participate for as long as you like. Please place filled bags and any large debris along the road through the parking lot. ODFW staff will be by throughout the day to collect it.
